More than two dozen U.S. cities are slowly sinking due to groundwater extraction. That’s the finding of a new Virginia Tech study published in the journal “Nature Cities.” The study finds that Houston is America’s fastest-sinking city, with some areas dropping about 20 millimeters a year. Chicago is among the cities researchers say are sinking between two and ten millimeters a year. Researchers say each city could experience severe and possibly catastrophic infrastructure damage due to the sinking.
