The Kankakee City Council last night gave approval to the operation of a halfway house for recovering drug addicts on property owned by the Catholic Diocese of Joliet in the Marycrest neighborhood despite a resident presenting a petition signed by herself and 201 other residents opposing the idea. Mayor Chris Curtis says moving forward with the plan was the right thing.
The building housing the residents must also be brought up to city fire codes before anyone can move in.
